Capgemini, SAP and Vanderlande Industries today opened the RFID Experience Center. The Experience Center is an integrated and realistic situation where RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is used in a physical distribution environment thereby giving more insight into the workings and possibilities of RFID in this kind of environment. The Experience Center is housed at the Vanderlande Industries facilities in Veghel, the Netherlands and is powered by Tyco, Philips, Hewlett-Packard and Intel. The RFID Experience Center is based on a fully functional cross-docking distribution center. Visitors are able to follow the workings of the complete supply chain from the moment the goods are received, cross-docking with the help of an automated sorting system through to and including the order checking and loading. The RFID readers are integrated with the SAP Warehouse Management system as well as the Vanderlande Industries specific sorting software. By doing this, it is possible to show to the practical application of RFID throughout the entire supply chain as well as illustrating that it is possible to realize a return on investment in over a short period of time. RFID promises to bring a revolution to the areas of logistics and distribution. Thanks to the integration of RFID technology with the hard- and software, it is possible to execute these complex logistics processes quicker and more accurately while keeping full control. Each product, crate or pallet provided with a RFID tag can be read among hundreds and even thousands of other tags. This means that its position within the logistics process is continuously visible. The efficiency of registration and handling processes increases, the number of incorrect deliveries decreases and the turnover in stock can be closely monitored. This way, its position within the logistic process is continuously visible. The efficiency of registration and handling processes increases, while the number of incorrect deliveries is reduced. In addition, stock turnover can be closely monitored. Capgemini, SAP and Vanderlande Industries expect that the RFID Experience Center will be of particular interest to clients working in the retail, logistics, distribution and pharmaceutical industries. In addition to a demonstration of the integrated solution, visitors will also have the opportunity to evaluate the implications for their individual organizations based on a concrete business case. The role of each company in the RFID Experience Center is as follows:
